Adventures in Relaxing

I'm not great at relaxing. And I know relaxing doesn't sound like much of an adventure, but for me, it can be!
I don't know what it is. I'm good at doing nothing, but relaxing is more difficult because even when doing nothing, my brain keeps going. When I'm doing nothing, I'm still thinking about what I need to do, who I need to help, how much I need to get done.  Often, I'm so busy thinking about it, I don't even realize how much time has lapsed and how little I've accomplished in the meantime.  So I've neither relaxed nor actually done anything but sit on my butt...  Does anyone else do that?

The other thing I tend to do is "relax" and then proceed to multi-task.   So I'll sit down to watch Doctor Who (on Amazon Prime) or GMM (Good Mythical Morning on Youtube) with my husband, and then instead of just watching and relaxing, I start fiddling with this blog, scrolling through facebook (which... if any of you do, you know it gets stressful), tidying, and countless other menial tasks that keep me occupied outside of sitting still.  I "watch" the show with my ears more than my eyes.
Even though I really enjoy the shows I watch, I find it hard to sit and let that be the only thing I'm doing.

I think that may be the problem. I'm not good at sitting still without moving and I've always been that way.  Even when I was in school, I always needed to be moving my hands to pay attention, so I would make paper stars, doodle in my notebook, write stories, or do homework for other classes rather than just sit and listen.  I was always paying attention, but I needed to keep my hands engaged or i would find my attention wandering to my own la la dreamland. A lot of teachers thought I wasn't focusing, but I could usually repeat the main points of the lesson without a problem and I did pretty well on exams.

A beautiful sunny day and a walk
for relaxation
What I've been realizing is that maybe watching shows and sitting still is not the best
way for me to relax.  It still leaves my brain space to wander and therefore to overthink... and then stress.
So the best way for me to relax is to actually move around: to walk, swim, hike, bike... I do my best relaxing in motion.
While walking, there are so many other things to focus on like the trees, the path, the view of the city, the people wandering around me.  If I'm going for speed, I focus on my breathing and trying to beat whatever pace I set the day before.
When hiking, it's similar. I don't think too much about the problems of my world because I'm so focused on the nature around me.  I'm focused on putting one foot in front of the next and not tripping on branches and roots.
Playing by the pool
When swimming, I'm focusing on getting it right and not breathing water.  When I get into a zone, I focus on the stroke and the feeling of the water cradling me, keeping me weightless.

It's easier for me to relax when I have an activity to do and I relax even more when I have company to share in that time with me.

Two weekends ago, we went down to my mom's place down the shore and it was a fun and relaxing weekend.
Walking down the pier on the bay
Walking past the drawbridge

The best relaxing moments were not those spent vegging in front of the TV (although that was okay too), but the biggest relaxation was in splashing around in the pool, then walking down the pier and eventually the boardwalk with my mom and Baros.

In the early afternoon, we went to the pool for a bit.  It wasn't strenuous swimming, but it was relaxing just splashing around in the sun and chatting with my mom's friends in the complex.

On the boardwalk, goofing around

Then later on, we went down to the pier and wandered past the restaurants and the boats.   We walked all the way to the end and back but it wasn't a long enough walk so we drove over to the boardwalk and walked there.  We started at the edge of one town and wandered all the way to the next one.

By the end of the walk, I felt calm and relaxed so I think more walks are in order.

Philadelphia Restaurant Review: Casablanca

While in Philly we also went to dinner at a restaurant near Warminster called Casablanca.  It's the second or third time I've been and I love it.  It's a Moroccan restaurant that my friend Andrea discovered years ago.

It's a whole experience that's definitely worth enjoying.

The first thing you notice when entering Casablanca is the color.   The whole restaurant is warm. It's painted golden yellow and the seating is a rich tapestry of oranges and reds. There are gold and bronze lanterns with colored glass.

When you arrive you get seated at a small table on a comfortable couch and the server rinses your hands with rose water since you'll be eating with bread and your hands (although I assume you can ask for utensils if you really want them). Then you're server describes the fixed menu you'll be enjoying.

It's 8 courses!! An appetizer plate of Hummus and Baba Ganoush, Three Salads, B'stilla, Chicken or Rabbit, Beef, Lamb or Chicken Kebabs, Couscous with Vegetables, Fresh Fruit and Baklava with Mint Tea. If you're a vegetarian there's also a vegetarian option so don't worry.  Soooo much delicious food.

The Hummus and Baba Ganoush are served at the same time as the Three Salads and it
was all good. My favorite of the salads was probably the marinated eggplant but I also loved the carrot salad and the cucumber, pepper and tomato salad.  It was all so tasty eaten with the plain pita bread.  Altogether, the flavors are very familiar if you eat Greek, Turkish or Mediterranean dishes.   You can't go wrong.
Round 1 & 2
The next course is B'Stilla.  This is a dish that was new to us.  It's a traditional Moroccan phyllo dough filled with egg, chicken, almonds, and cinnamon which is dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon. It's really good but also somewhat odd for a Western/American palette since it combines sweet and savory in an appetizer course.  I really enjoyed it.  The chicken and eggs were cooked perfectly and went so well with the crispy phyllo and the hint of sweetness from the powdered sugar.
B'Stilla
Next is the chicken or rabbit course.  You get one dish for every 2 people so since we were 3, we decided to try both the chicken and rabbit.  The chicken can be prepared 4 different ways: Lemons and Olives, Spicy Harissa, Walnuts or Dried Apricots.  We decided to go for the Spicy Harissa which was quite spicy.  It was delicious and full of flavor.  For us, it wasn't too spicy but if you're not a spicy food eater, be wary.  The rabbit, on the other hand, is cooked in a mildly spiced tomato sauce served with dates.  It was really delicious and the rabbit was tender and juicy.
Our Spicy Chicken... I forgot to photograph the rabbit!
I forgot to take a picture of the kebab because I was so excited for it.  We got the lamb kebabs and it was so tasty. It was lamb, peppers, onion, and other vegetables grilled to perfection after being brushed with a marinade of garlic and olive oil. Next time, I definitely want to try the other option which is lamb topped with sweet honey and almonds or alternatively with lemon and cumin.  That sweet honey and almonds sounded so good to me but we went traditional this last time.

At this point, I can tell you we were already getting full.  We really needed a fourth person to help us eat the food (which is why we took leftovers for Andrea's husband).
Cous Cous amazingness
The next course was the couscous served with carrots, onions and other vegetables. It also had chicken, chickpeas and raisins on top.  Normally, I don't love raisins, but here it just complemented the dish so well.   It's savory with a hint of sweetness from the raisins and spices. I definitely recommend it.

Belly Dancing fun!
At this point we were ready to pop, but it was so worth it!  We took our time with our fruit (and even took some to go because we were so very full).  We did eat our Baklava somehow, although I don't know where it fit.  And our Mint Tea served in the traditional way, poured from on high to aerate and cool it, was very welcome.  The taste was great and it was almost a show unto itself watching him pour it!  All in all it was a terrific meal even though we couldn't walk very far afterwards.

What made the meal even more special, was the entertainment. For part of the meal, there was a live belly dancer to watch and even dance with.  We didn't dance because we were shy, but lots of other tables joined in the antics.

If you're in the Philly area, you should definitely consider partaking in the experience because it was so much fun.
The faces of three very happy, very full diners!

Philadelphia Adventures: Day 2 The Philadelphia Zoo

On our second day in Philly, we went to the The Philadelphia Zoo.

Day 1
Restaurant Review: John's Roast Pork
Restaurant Review: Casablanca

I was so excited.  Kid in a candy store excited!
We had a lot of fun wandering through seeing all of the different animals.  It was large, but not so large we couldn't see all of the exhibits comfortably.  In fact, we even saw some twice. And it's pretty well organized with lots of signage to make it easy to navigate.  It was also lovely because some of the animals have private walkways so they can travel through clear tunnels over the pedestrian walkways and you can see them on their travels.  That was pretty amazing.
The only downside was the heat.  It was too hot for us (and for some of the animals) so we had to keep trying to find shade and other ways to cool down.
That being said, we had a lot of fun.  I took soooo many pictures, so I'll just share the best ones here.

Friends

That's all there is to our Zoo Adventure.  It was so much fun even though I was dying in the heat. I know Andrea and Baros felt the same so at the end of the day Andrea went home to shower and Baros and I went back to center to Reading Market. We had quite a bit of time to kill before catching our bus back to NYC so we decided to grab some delicious cheeses. And then after sitting for a long, long time recovering, we went to dinner at The Dandelion before heading home.

It was a short trip but we had a blast and I'm definitely looking forward to our next.  Since we don't have much of a budget right now, Philly was a lovely, easy and affordable place to travel and we have the added bonus of being able to visit with friends!!
