Restaurant Review: Azucar Ice Cream Company

Azucar in its colorful glory
Before going to Miami, we watched a ton of youtube videos on the top food and restaurants and Azucar was consistently mentioned as one of the best ice cream places there.  It’s in Little Havana and known for its creaminess.
I was a little skeptical but even upon getting to Miami, one uber driver and several other people recommended we go there.

So go we did.
I loved the exterior. The giant ice cream cone is incredibly fun and colorful and definitely feels like it belongs in Little Havana. It was also crowded with people, inside and out.  It’s a very popular place and felt so alive in comparison to some of Little Havana which felt sleepy and a little less vibrant (possibly just the timing of our trip).
There was one more area of ice cream like this... but still more flavors on the chalk wall not available
We had high expectations by the time we got inside. It has a quaint, old school ice cream parlor feel which I really liked. It had a cool chalkboard wall to the left  and some interesting ice cream eating photos to the right. We were a little confused by some of those pictures as they picture children eating melting ice cream and it’s cute but almost a little gross.  I did really like the seating options they had. There were a couple of table and then window seats available. The window seats are covered with cushions made from old Havana style shirts, covered with protective plastic (which makes clean up easy).  It was such a fun idea and really fit with the Little Havana vibes. Seating is limited but nice.
Our Beautiful cup of fruity flavors
I think our first disappointment was the limited flavors.  Although their flavor wall lists a ton of flavors, that day they were only serving a small portion of them (I don’t know if that’s typical or just because of the time of year).  Some of the flavors we would have loved to try, were not available.

So in the end we decided to get one large cup with  Red Velvet, Mango and the Passion fruit. We were not disappointed by the size.  You get a lot of ice cream in a large cup!
They were good but not my or Baros’ favorite ice cream.
Of the three, the Red Velvet stands out as the best.  It was creamy without being overly sweet or too rich. It tasted like Red Velvet cake without being cloying.  It had the fastest melting point of the three.
The mango was also not overly sweet which was good but there was something about the texture that was off.  It wasn’t as creamy and felt grainier in texture. So it fell apart easily. I think the best thing about the mango was the flavor.  It really tasted like fresh mangoes.
The passion fruit was also good but it was sour.  Surprisingly so. It was pucker-up sour with an icier texture consistent with a sorbet.  It was very fresh also but the tartness made it difficult to eat alone.
At the end of the day we still really enjoyed our ice cream because, well, it's ice cream, and you can't go wrong with ice cream. At it's essentials it was still lovely, it just wasn't as good as we were hoping.

I don’t know if we just picked the wrong flavors but we were a little disappointed after all the buildup.  I would still like to go back another time to find out if it’s just the flavors we tried. Maybe there are other more iconic flavors we should have gotten instead.
If anyone has gone, I would love to hear what you thought.

Is Azucar overrated?  Or did we just try the wrong flavors? If we ever make it back, what flavors should we get?
